Fibromyalgia Treatments – Strategies For Living Life Unlimited by Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia, especially the chronic pain that comes with it, can be overwhelming. However, there are many things a person can do to recover and/or manage, living life to its fullest. The most important point to grasp is that it requires action on the part of the person who is challenged by fibromyalgia. As an occupational therapist, I have seen this confirmed over and over in treating patients. Those who take an active part in their fibromyalgia treatments and responsibility for their choices do far better than those who take a passive roll and tend to see their problems and symptoms as outside of their control.
One of the most defeating attitudes is when a person perceives that he or she can do nothing in regards to affecting a change for improvement and that it is everyone else’s responsibility to perform the magical fibromyalgia treatment for them and it is others fault when things do not work or get better. None of us like to hear that the “buck stops here” but that is the reality when it comes to managing our own bodies and minds. Truly we can seek out health professionals and others who can assist us and learn from others but all this is useless if we do not do our part. The purpose of this article is to give strategies and tools for improving and managing fibromyalgia with the goal of empowering you to live life unlimited by the chronic pain and many other symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Some strategies and tools that focus on the psychological component of managing chronic pain and other fibromyalgia symptom are as follows. Good sleep management is a vital component for the body to heal and restore itself. Meditation, prayer, thankfulness, deep breathing, listening to relaxing music and humor can be instrumental in releasing and decreasing stress that often comes hand in hand with fibromyalgia. Often how we perceive our pain and other fibromyalgia symptom can lead to increased stress thereby exacerbating our symptoms and putting us on the track of a downward spiral. Journaling can be a helpful tool as well as sharing your challenges with someone you trust and/or faces similar challenges. Care needs to be taken though not to get into a complaining and blaming session which is easy and tempting to do often. Get encouraged and inspired regularly by listening to and/or reading material from someone or some source you respect, such as the Bible, Dr. Phil, or Joyce Myers. The source may differ for each one of us – the important thing is that we need continual encouragement and inspiration to be the most we can be and to refocus.
Some of the strategies that focus on the physical components of managing chronic pain include the following. Massage can help relieve stress and loosen painful areas. Exercise done right is an effective way to manage symptoms. However, with fibromyalgia overly strenuous exercise can be more painful than helpful. One of the best resources I have read for exercising recommendations for people challenged by fibromyalgia is in the book titled, The Fibromyalgia Solution by David Dryland, MD with Lorie List. Pacing yourself throughout the day and taking rest breaks is as important as adequately exercising. Hot and cold therapy can provide good temporary relief. Medications can be beneficial but have side effects often. Consult with your doctor regarding options for medications and other fibromyalgia treatments.
Lastly, even though the list could go on and on, an extremely important strategy to help improve and manage fibromyalgia, especially the chronic pain is to get engaged in purposeful and meaningful activities. Volunteer, reach out and help someone in need. Often the simple question to someone in need, “How can I help you?” becomes a tremendous blessing to them and the giver. This helps to get our focus off of our own problems. I encourage finding your passion in life and focusing on it. Doing this frees us to live life unlimited by the crosses we bear which we all bear crosses in life, for some of us fibromyalgia happens to be one of them.

Suggestions To Manage Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?
I have had a string of health problems over the last year and have been to see 5-6 different doctors to try to obtain a diagnosis. After extensive blood tests, x-rays and evaluations, I have been told that no one knows exactly what is causing my various aches and pains and more than likely I have fibromyalgia.
This diagnosis does not account for the eye inflammation, chronic and severe sinusitus or fluctuations in my SED rate among other things. However, it is the only “diagnosis” that has been offered to explain the chronic pain in my arms.
Since this is all I have to go on, I was hoping someone might have suggestions on how I might be able to manage the symptoms of my “fibromyalgia”. I have been told to exercise more. Does anyone know of any other dietary/lifestyle changes that might potentially benefit someone with this condition? I’m also open to suggestion on how to obtain a real, conclusive diagnosis over a catch-all one given because no one is sure what’s wrong with me.

MSM Fibromyalgia Treatment Options
If you are suffering from fibromyalgia, then you are one of over six million Americans who suffer from the disabling condition. Fibromyalgia is known to be the second leading arthritis-related condition according to the Arthritis Foundation, affecting about five percent of the total population with women four times more likely to develop the condition as compared to men. Many treatments are available to help people cope with its debilitating symptoms, and MSM fibromyalgia treatment appears to be one of the safest options as well as one that may be able to offer the most relief.
The substance MSM, or methyl-sulfonyl-methane is a naturally occurring compound with a sulfur base that is found in human diets. MSM is an odorless, water soluble and bitter white crystalline powder if seen in its purified state.
The substance occurs naturally in the environment and in the body by way of the food that we eat. It is a normal component of vegetables, meat and seafood. It can also be found in coffee, tea and chocolate. This substance is inert and non-toxic. It is even rated as one of the least toxic of substances in biology.
MSM is believed to have non-inflammatory effects in the body, the reason why it is being used for arthritic relief as well as for relief of some symptoms of fibromyalgia. It also allows people to better control pain, which makes fibromyalgia such a disabling disorder. Helping to control the pain can help sufferers being able to better cope up with the condition and the many other side effects that come with it.
MSM comes in seven forms, capsule or tablet form like a vitamin, powder, flakes or crystals, which you dissolve in liquid or as a cream or gel that you can rub into the effected area. The only real difference between these forms of MSM are the ways you get the MSM into your body, other than that the MSM is the same.
MSM doesn’t require a prescription, although it is always a good idea to keep your doctor appraised of what supplements you are taking, especially if you are pregnant. It may take up to a couple of months to see any improvement.
Fibromyalgia is a really troublesome condition to have. It effects the soft tissues of the body – the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, which causes considerable pain after some time.
Its variety of symptoms include chronic fatigue which can last all day, a persistent burning feeling, soreness of the muscles and joints, pain and stiffness all over the body and frequent headaches.
Fibromyalgia can even cause irritable bowel, insomnia, anxiety and depression as a result of prolonged experience with the disorder. Different people may feel different levels of the symptoms at any one time, but the recurring feeling of pain and fatigue is always generally present.
The actual cause of fibromyalgia has not yet been found as yet. But doctors and researchers have been able to look through the many possible causes. Some believe that it might be related to arthritis. There are doctors who believe that it may be a result of some hormonal imbalance in the body. There are others who believe that it may be the result of the poor functioning of the thyroid gland. Genetics may play a part too, with sufferers more likely to be diagnosed if a close relative has the condition.
Fibromyalgia can also be very difficult to diagnose because many of the symptoms that it exhibits mimic those of other diseases. A diagnostic criteria has been drawn up to help doctor determine whether a patient has fibromyalgia or another unrelated condition.

MSM fibromyalgia treatment is not known to cure people of this disabling condition. Instead, it helps in treating the usually painful symptoms associated with the condition. The compound MSM is known to have pain reducing properties as well as help in increasing blood supply in the body that provides the relief to fibromyalgia sufferers. MSM treatments tend to be effective for as long as you are taking them and there is plenty of anecdotal evidence showing that it can provide real fibromyalgia pain relief.
