True FMS occurs when the nerves in your skin closest to the surfact fire their neuroconductors to indicate to your brain that your skin is being burned causing extreme sensitivity to the slightes touch. Most doctors are misdiagnosing other disorders as FMS when they can’t figure out what’s wrong with you. It’s their own little way of keeping you sick and coming in for doctor’s visits. A coworker of mine has been diagnosed with it and now gets an additional four days off each and every month whenever she likes. I’m convinced that she’s a complete hypochondriac with manic-depressive tendencies but I’m not a doctor by a long shot.
Point is, to my knowledge FMS is not supposed to be passed genetically and there’s not presently a cure. All anyone can do is treat the discomfort because it’s more profitable than fiding a cure. Much of the world’s medical resources are geared toward treating pain for that very reason.
I would say certain characteristics or things that predispose you for it are passed down.
I do believe you can get rid of it. I know a couple people who did very well with chiropractic care and dietary changes.
First let me just say, I’m trully sorry that you have FMS (Fibromyalgia). I suffer greatly from this debilitating illness and when I hear ignorant people answer these questions without trully knowing the about the illness it just makes me really sad for someone like you who is seeking the truth. There is no cure for this and no you CAN NOT get rid of it. Some studies have shown that it is genetic while others are in disagreement. There is no one in my family that as it yet I’ve met others who have siblings and a parent that has it. It can be and is extremely painful and covers your entire body. As far as the skin sensitivity this other person is talking about covers an extremely small percentage of FMS. Usually but not always you will also have CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), MPS (Myofascial Pain Syndrome) along with the FMS. Before you listen to anyone go online and really read up on this illness. There are many many drugs that they are trying to use for this, but alot don’t work. I’ve been thru so many that I couldn’t tolerate and Lyrica is one of them. You may do well on it though, so give it a try. Also, don’t be surprised or ashamed of depression. This is very very common for us to get depressed with this diagnosis. Anyone who lives with chronic pain for more than 2 wks will get depression and is very normal to get depression so for your sake please make sure you seek the help of a specialist for that. Also, there are going to be people out there who are very ignorant and think you’re faking it or are trully not in a much pain as you say. It was hard for me at first but am okay with it now and realize just how ignorant these people really are. Hang in there and please feel free to contact me any time you have any further questions. There is so much I could tell you but not enough room. I hope you’re not in too much pain. Soft hugs to you. Karen
there seems to be a genetic predisposition to fibromyalgia–like a predisposition to cancer, heart disease, etc…but it is not genetic like cystic fibrosis or eye color..
people who have been ‘cured’ probably never had real fms–they had something with similar symptoms
some people have managed it–but that is different from cure
